LCP/Essex Professional Doctorate
in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

This part-time, two-year programme of study is offered by the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex, in collaboration with the London Centre for Psychotherapy.

It is open to qualified members of the London Centre for Psychotherapy alongside members of the Tavistock Clinic and the Society of Analytical Psychology, both of which organisations have a parallel partnership arrangement with the University of Essex.

The course leads to a Professional Doctorate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy or, in the case of the SAP, Analytical Psychology.

The Doctorate has three components

  • The already-completed LCP Qualifying Course.  (LCP members who did not originally qualify at the LCP are considered by Essex University on a case-by-case basis.)
  • A course in Research Methodology (Year 1).
  • A research dissertation of 35,000 words carried out under academic supervision (Year 2).

The research for the dissertation may be carried out in any area of psychoanalytic psychotherapy or analytical psychology, subject to the availability of supervisors.  In some cases the research will be indistinguishable from research for a PhD, for example in conceptual, historical or outcome studies.  Where the clinical process itself generates the data, such as the use of one or a small number of detailed case reports or the use of psychodynamic observation and interviews, quite particular methodological issues come into use.

The course is taught one day a week (Friday) at the Essex University Belsize Centre, 94 Belsize Lane, NW3.

All LCP members may apply. See website address at foot of page.  Applications should be in by the beginning of July.
