This course programme is specially designed for applicants who wish to work more intensively in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and to be registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council.
Applications are welcome from non- British Psychoanalytic Council trainings in Adult Psychotherapy, whose previous training and subsequent experience has not included sufficient intensive psychotherapy and clinical work. It is also open to qualified Child Psychotherapists.
Applicants will follow an individually tailored training programme aimed to further their training and clinical practice to the standard required for BPC registration as defined by the BPC Guidelines for Acceptance of New Individual Members by BPC Member Organisations. Successful completion of this course leads to Membership of the LCP, which includes BPC registration.
Applicants who have not already completed a recognised Infant Observation Course will be required to complete a two year Infant Observation. This can be taken as an individual course or as part of the MEP programme.
Requirements
Upon entry applicants will be required to have had the following;
- 2 years clinical experience after qualification.
- 3x weekly personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy for several years with a BPC registered training psychotherapist. If not, applicants may be required to commence or continue further personal analysis.
The Course
The components of the course are flexible and individually tailored according to the needs for further training. The aim is to reach a standard of training and clinical experience equivalent to the qualification requirements of the LCP Qualifying Course, which leads to BPC registration. All members of the course will work with two 3 x weekly patients with weekly supervision by a BPC supervisor.
Components of the programme may include:
- Attendance at theoretical and clinical seminars
- Enhanced tutorial support
- Further psychotherapy with a BPC training psychotherapist/analyst
- A clinical paper
The MEP is a programme of 10 seminars per term; entry is possible throughout the year, at the beginning of each term. Participants will join various established seminars within the Qualifying Course, the Post Curricular Seminars, and other courses, to further the study of clinical theory and practice.
Attendance of regular clinical seminars is required until completion of the Programme.
Clinical Work
Participants are required to work with two intensive (3x weekly) patients, one of each gender. The duration of one patient must be at least 2 years, the other for 18 months and must be supervised weekly by two BPC Training Supervisors.
Personal Tutor
Each candidate is allocated a personal tutor to support his or her development; enhanced tutoring may be available where appropriate.
The personal tutor on the MEP will have a combined role. They will be available for pastoral support but will also assess the particular needs for training and clinical experience of the individual candidate. They will act as a training progress adviser and will report to the Education Committee.
Qualification
Qualification will be based on the reports from the tutors, the clinical supervisors and seminar leaders’ reports will also be taken into consideration. A Clinical Paper may be required if a candidate has not written a qualifying paper of sufficient analytic standard in previous training.
Outcome
- LCP Membership, including BPC registration
- Eligible for applying for MA in Psychoanalytic Social Observation; or for Professional Doctorate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, LCP/University of Essex.
